12 Therefore, son of man, say to your people: ‘The righteousness of the righteous man will not deliver him in the day of his transgression; neither will the wickedness of the wicked man cause him to stumble on the day he turns from his wickedness. Nor will the righteous man be able to survive by his righteousness on the day he sins.’

לֵאמֹֽר׃

saying ,
24 “Son of man, those living in the ruins in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many; surely the land has been given to us as a possession.’

יִשְׂרָאֵל֙

of Israel
אֹמְרִ֣ים
’ō·mə·rîm
are saying ,
לֵאמֹ֔ר
lê·mōr
. . .
אַבְרָהָ֔ם
’aḇ·rā·hām
‘ Abraham
הָיָ֣ה
hā·yāh
was
אֶחָד֙
’e·ḥāḏ
only one man ,
וַיִּירַ֖שׁ
way·yî·raš
yet he possessed
אֶת־
’eṯ-
הָאָ֑רֶץ
hā·’ā·reṣ
the land .
וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ
wa·’ă·naḥ·nū
But we
רַבִּ֔ים
rab·bîm
are many ;
הָאָ֖רֶץ
hā·’ā·reṣ
[surely] the land
נִתְּנָ֥ה
nit·tə·nāh
has been given
לָ֛נוּ
lā·nū
to us
לְמוֹרָשָֽׁה׃ס
lə·mō·w·rā·šāh
as a possession . ’
25 Therefore tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘You eat meat with the blood in it, lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood. Should you then possess the land?

תִּשְׂא֥וּ

lift up
וְעֵינֵכֶ֛ם

your eyes
אֶל־
’el-
to
גִּלּוּלֵיכֶ֖ם
gil·lū·lê·ḵem
your idols ,
תִּשְׁפֹּ֑כוּ
tiš·pō·ḵū
and shed
וְדָ֣ם
wə·ḏām
blood .
תִּירָֽשׁוּ׃
tî·rā·šū
Should you then possess
וְהָאָ֖רֶץ
wə·hā·’ā·reṣ
the land ?
26 You have relied on your swords, you have committed detestable acts, and each of you has defiled his neighbor’s wife. Should you then possess the land?’

your swords ,
עֲשִׂיתֶ֣ן

detestable acts ,
וְאִ֛ישׁ
wə·’îš
and each
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
טִמֵּאתֶ֑ם
ṭim·mê·ṯem
of you has defiled
רֵעֵ֖הוּ
rê·‘ê·hū
his neighbor’s
אֵ֥שֶׁת
’ê·šeṯ
wife .
תִּירָֽשׁוּ׃ס
tî·rā·šū
Should you then possess
וְהָאָ֖רֶץ
wə·hā·’ā·reṣ
the land ? ’
27 Tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘As surely as I live, those in the ruins will fall by the sword, those in the open field I will give to be devoured by wild animals, and those in the strongholds and caves will die by plague.

the open field
הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה
haś·śā·ḏeh
. . .
נְתַתִּ֖יו
nə·ṯat·tîw
I will give
לְאָכְל֑וֹ
lə·’ā·ḵə·lōw
to be devoured
לַחַיָּ֥ה
la·ḥay·yāh
by wild animals ,
וַאֲשֶׁ֛ר
wa·’ă·šer
and those
בַּמְּצָד֥וֹת
bam·mə·ṣā·ḏō·wṯ
in the strongholds
וּבַמְּעָר֖וֹת
ū·ḇam·mə·‘ā·rō·wṯ
and caves
יָמֽוּתוּ׃
yā·mū·ṯū
will die
בַּדֶּ֥בֶר
bad·de·ḇer
by plague .
28 I will make the land a desolate waste, and the pride of her strength will come to an end. The mountains of Israel will become desolate, so that no one will pass through.
וְנָתַתִּ֤י

I will make

הָאָ֙רֶץ֙
hā·’ā·reṣ
the land
שְׁמָמָ֣ה
šə·mā·māh
a desolate
וּמְשַׁמָּ֔ה

waste ,
גְּא֣וֹן
gə·’ō·wn
and the pride
עֻזָּ֑הּ
‘uz·zāh
of her strength
וְנִשְׁבַּ֖ת
wə·niš·baṯ
will come to an end .
הָרֵ֥י
hā·rê
The mountains
יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל
yiś·rā·’êl
of Israel
וְשָֽׁמְמ֛וּ
wə·šā·mə·mū
will become desolate ,
מֵאֵ֥ין
mê·’ên
so that no one
עוֹבֵֽר׃
‘ō·w·ḇêr
will pass through .
29 Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a desolate waste because of all the abominations they have committed.’

a desolate
וּמְשַׁמָּ֔ה

waste
עַ֥ל
‘al
because of
כָּל־
kāl-
all
תּוֹעֲבֹתָ֖ם
tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·ṯām
the abominations
אֲשֶׁ֥ר
’ă·šer
-
עָשֽׂוּ׃ס
‘ā·śū
they have committed . ’
30 As for you, son of man, your people are talking about you near the city walls and in the doorways of their houses. One speaks to another, each saying to his brother, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the LORD!’

and in the doorways
הַבָּתִּ֑ים
hab·bāt·tîm
of their houses .

the LORD ! ’
31 So My people come to you as usual, sit before you, and hear your words; but they do not put them into practice. Although they express love with their mouths, their hearts pursue dishonest gain.

דְּבָרֶ֔יךָ
də·ḇā·re·ḵā
your words ;
וְאוֹתָ֖ם
wə·’ō·w·ṯām

לֹ֣א

but they do not
יַֽעֲשׂ֑וּ
ya·‘ă·śū
put them into practice .

Although

they
עֹשִׂ֔ים

with their mouths ,
לִבָּ֥ם

their hearts
הֹלֵֽךְ׃

pursue
בִצְעָ֖ם
ḇiṣ·‘ām
dishonest gain .
32 Indeed, you are to them like a singer of love songs with a beautiful voice, who skillfully plays an instrument. They hear your words but do not put them into practice.
וְהִנְּךָ֤
wə·hin·nə·ḵā
Indeed, you [are]
לָהֶם֙
lā·hem
to them
עֲגָבִ֔ים
‘ă·ḡā·ḇîm
like a singer of love
כְּשִׁ֣יר
kə·šîr
songs
יְפֵ֥ה
yə·p̄êh
with a beautiful
ק֖וֹל
qō·wl
voice ,
וּמֵטִ֣ב
ū·mê·ṭiḇ
who skillfully
נַגֵּ֑ן
nag·gên
plays an instrument .
וְשָֽׁמְעוּ֙
wə·šā·mə·‘ū
They hear
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
דְּבָרֶ֔יךָ
də·ḇā·re·ḵā
your words
אֵינָ֖ם
’ê·nām
but do not
אוֹתָֽם׃
’ō·w·ṯām
-
וְעֹשִׂ֥ים
wə·‘ō·śîm
put them into practice .
33 So when it comes to pass—and surely it will come—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
וּבְבֹאָ֑הּ

So when it comes to pass —
הִנֵּ֣ה

and surely
בָאָ֔ה
ḇā·’āh
it will come —
וְיָ֣דְע֔וּ
wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū
then they will know
כִּ֥י

that
נָבִ֖יא
nā·ḇî
a prophet
הָיָ֥ה
hā·yāh
has been
בְתוֹכָֽם׃ס
ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵām
among them . ”
