For whom the Lord loves he chastens, and whips every son whom he receives. Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to them which are exercised thereby.

He that refuses instruction despises his own soul: but he that hears reproof gets understanding.

Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
